Formerly known as The Renoir Hotel, the newly transformed San Francisco Proper Hotel is a key component of the mid-Market Street area, at the intersection of the Theatre & Loft District and the historic Civic Center. The Renoir Hotel was constructed in 1904 by local architect Albert Pissis (who also designed the Hibernia Bank across the street) and on the National Register of Historic Places. Elements of the project included a rehabilitated double-height historic lobby with decorative plaster, six levels of newly appointed guestrooms, a restaurant (Villon) on the ground floor featuring a contemporary American menu and rooftop bar (Charmaine's) with an European chic meets "California Cool" vibe offering outdoor seating with unique panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline. Since opening in the fall of 2017, the San Francisco Proper Hotel has become a popular gathering spot in this increasingly revitalized neighborhood.
