CASE STUDY:

DOCUMENTATION OF THE NEUTRA REUNION HOUSE

WCAPT in collaboration with the Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design invites you to a full-day preservation documentation workshop at architect Richard Neutra's Reunion House in Silver Lake, CA.

Saturday, March 25th

9.30am - 4.00pm

With a happy hour to follow at the

Red Lion German Tavern

Surround yourself in a documentation case study: Richard Neutra's 1950 Reunion House. Presentations and panel discussions will introduce the Reunion House before examining best practices for scanning, photography and virtual surveys.

A multi-disciplinary recording campaign has been undertaken over the past few years that used virtual and analog technologies to compile data on every facet of Reunion House and informing future preservation activities there.

This intensive on-site workshop incorporates that information and presents the actual scan data, HABS photographs, reports, virtual reality tours and analysis gathered from the challenging modern site. Box lunch included.

Presenters will include:

Sian Winship

Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design

Barbara Lamprecht

Author and Neutra Scholar

Peyton Hall

Historic Resources Group / USC

Chris Gray

WCAPT

Stephen Schafer

HABSPHOTO.COM

Alan White

Topics will include:

3D Laser Scanning

Matterport Virtual Tours

Drone Imaging

Large Format HABS and Digital Architectural Photography

Architectural Materials Data Collection

The workshop will present a brief context of Richard Neutra and the Reunion House in addition to presentations covering recording technologies – new and old. A moderated panel discussion will follow, focusing on the value of the documentary data compiled to date, and how that data will be used for maintenance, education, outreach, accessibility and architectural study on the Reunion House and similar modern buildings.

After an included boxed lunch (sponsored by Historic Resources Group), Peyton Hall will revisit the materials conservation data collected by USC Heritage Conservation students as classwork-- documenting every fixture and fitting in the property. The afternoon will include hands-on demonstrations of the digital and analog survey technologies and a site-walk covering the challenges overcome by the speakers while recording the property, before wrapping with a panel Q&A.

Attendees are encouraged to continue the conversation at the nearby Red Lion German Restaurant and Tavern immediately after the event.
