WCAPT invites members and guests to a double-feature
event discussing the recent award-winning 3-year rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the historic Tower Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles - our first in-person event of 2023!
Free lunch-time webinar on Thursday, March 9th at 12 noon
In-person tour Thursday, March 16th at 5pm, with a Happy Hour to follow at Pattern Bar (corner of 9th and Main)
Designed by Architect Charles Lee, the theatre was designed in Renaissance Revival style with innovative French, Spanish, Moorish, and Italian elements, all executed in terra-cotta. The Tower Theater was the first theater in Los Angeles to be wired for the groundbreaking technology of the day - talking pictures! It also kept patrons cool with air conditioning, another emerging technology at the time.
After standing vacant for 35 years, a team of preservation professionals collaborated to sensitively rehabilitate the Theater while adaptively reusing the space to create Apple's flagship Los Angeles retail and multipurpose space.
These two sessions will focus on the exterior terra cotta façade rehabilitation, preservation challenges, decorative painting and ornamental plaster restoration.
Presenters will include:
Devon Barnes, Gruen Associates
Ean Frank + Dick Gee, Spectra Company
Peyton Hall, Historic Resources Group
Ryan Upp, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger
Joseph Sembrat, EverGreene Architectural Arts
