PRESIDIO HISTORIC PRESERVATION TOUR

WCAPT invites members and guests to a Nor-Cal, in-person event. Please join us for a tour of The Presidio in San Francisco, CA.

The Presidio was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962. The Presidio Trust was created in 1996 and tasked with preserving the natural, cultural, scenic, and recreational resources of the Presidio. The Trust works closely with the National Park Service and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in managing the Presidio and protecting its resources.

We will be touring buildings 102 and 103, which are part of the Montgomery Street Barracks and were constructed in 1896. Building 103 has been fully rehabilitated and repurposed into a commercial space. The seismic upgrades to this structure featured an innovative approach to strengthening the unreinforced masonry buildings. A similar approach will be adopted for Building 102, which is soon to undergo rehabilitation.

Explore Battery Bluff Park - join us to learn about the history of the concrete batteries above San Francisco Bay and the conservation efforts taken to preserve them. Walk through the park, discover their significance, and understand the methods used to clean and protect them.

Additional Information:

  • Building 102 is on Montgomery St. (two buildings away from the Disney Family Museum)

  • Wear comfortable shoes. The Battery Bluff is located about a half mile away from the Montgomery St. Barracks. The trail is level and fully accessible.

  • Consider wearing sunscreen or hats as much of the tour will be outside.

Speakers:

  • Robert Thomson, Federal Preservation Officer, The Presidio Trust
  • Paul Littler, Principal, Holmes
  • Erik Sandell, Conservator, ARG CS

Parking is across the street at The Parking Lot on Taylor Rd. The cost for parking permits range between $2.50 - $3/hour and between $12.50 - $15/day.
