ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:

Tarrah Beebe, AIA
Tarrah Beebe has just completed her fifteenth year with KFA. She is a resident of Downtown Los Angeles with roots in Boston’s historic Charlestown neighborhood. The hours of her undergraduate years were divided between the design studios of Catholic University’s School of Architecture, the volleyball court as CUA’s first libero, and the urban laboratory of Washington DC. Tarrah’s work, in both new and existing buildings throughout Los Angeles, includes creative office, education, housing, hospitality, and commercial projects. She loves the bustle of a dense urban space and has a passion for the collaboration that makes these spaces great. She studied urban design in Tanzania as a Fulbright scholar, and has taught at USC in the Undergraduate Building Science program. She also coaches a club volleyball team in Santa Monica.

Johanna Hauser, AIA
Johanna grew up in Austin, Texas and spent much of her childhood observing dramatic landscapes and old buildings on road trips with her family. After studying German literature at Bard College, she landed a temp job as a receptionist at an inspiring architecture firm in San Francisco, which led her to pursue a Masters in Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin. During that time, she traveled to Europe, studying the effects of fascism on the built environment in pre-war Italy and post-war Germany. A collage artist at heart, Johanna sees architecture as a practice of working with what’s available, be it good, bad or ugly. Her belief that anything can be uplifted, however broken it may appear, combined with her love of complex puzzles, makes her happiest working on adaptive reuse projects and working towards equity in the profession. She was the 2023 AIA|LA JEDI Committee Co-Chair. When she is not otherwise occupied, Johanna spends her time reading fat novels, listening to morbid podcasts, and restoring a redwood cabin in Riverside County, lovingly known as the G(a)y Frame.

Dick Gee, AIA, LEED

Dick Gee is the Lead Architect, as well as a Project Manager, for Spectra Company, a construction firm specializing in historic buildings. He manages its Preservation Consulting Division. Dick previously acted as the Principal of the Los Angeles office for JAG Architects, and has worked on historic rehabilitation for over 30 years. Currently, Dick oversees preservation consulting, documentation and investigation services, design-build and special historic construction projects for Spectra, bringing both architectural and construction experience to each project. He started his preservation career working on rehabilitating buildings on Olvera Street, continued as the Preservation Architect for the El Capitan, and the historic buildings of both the Pechanga and Pala Tribes, and recently has worked on the rehabilitation of the San Gabriel Mission and Crystal Cove Beach Cottages. Dick has been awarded California Preservation Foundation, Los Angeles Conservancy, and other local preservation awards for numerous projects. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley, is an AIA member, and a Leed Accredited Professional.
